Exactly this. Search for a mini PC and it'll have a cheap Intel SoC in it that performs way better than a Raspberry Pi 5 but cheaper (comes with everything for ~$300), and even consumes a similar amount of power.

It's probably cheaper to switch your ISP to one that your target site does not block, than to pay someone else to buy that connection and proxy all your traffic through them.
This was a knee jerk response to the first paragraph. They weren't talking about a general crawler, but a subset of Wikipedia, stack overflow, programming docs and github. You can download archives of all of those except github, and github could be queried using the api or GH cli

I kind of assumed it is, given how it suddenly seemed to start getting namedropped in multiple comment threads. And it's often in response to someone saying content is obviously LLM (with examples) and the shill wedges pangram into the conversation "omg you're right, I didn't believe you but I checked this new product and wow it agreed with you" as though that adds anything to the discussion at all.
Pangram gets brought up a lot because if I read an article and think it's blatant AI slop and want to communicate that fact, a natural impulse is to provide some sort of objective corroboration rather than just asserting that I have superior taste and thus am able to tell.
Also Pangram is basically the only AI detector that's actually put in the work to build an accurate classifier, so if you try to discuss AI writing detection without being specific that you mean Pangram you'll get half a dozen commenters screaming about how awful some of the snake-oil salesmen like GPTZero are.
I mention pangram because it’s good at what it does. Otherwise, people like to claim “That’s just how I’ve always written. I always say That’s the seam and the seam undercuts the other pillar. It’s not just correct, it’s also verified lol; it’s just how I speak” and it’s obvious bullshit. The authors are so often dishonest that it’s hard to believe that the things they’re saying are anything but a random hallucination.
Interestingly I always use swapfiles and this page made me realise there can be a performance impact if the filesystem is old - the lkml link says as long as the swap file isn't fragmented there's no impact
In practice, there’s a potentially tremendous impact if you’re using a spinning metal disk. Sectors at the beginning of the disk (which is at the outer edge) are read/written way faster than sectors at the end. File systems tend to prefer writing files at the beginning. If the file system has been used for ‘a long time’ then it’s either fragmented - or it’s been defragmented and the free space is at the slow end of the drive.
One nice thing about swap partitions is that they can be fixed in place even before OS installation.
(Of course, if you’re using swap enough for this to be a huge factor, you probably have bigger problems. But I haven’t done the math.)
Indeed. I'd always put swap near the beginning, then a small root partition, then the rest. This reduced head movement for often-accessed data, and used the higher bandwidth of the outer tracks.
