Maybe. But whales don’t get cancer either, and whale metabolism is… impressive (well their resting heart rate is lower than ours but they grow orders of magnitude faster, to a point, and sustain themselves gorging on literal tons of food).

Humans have pretty low selective pressure for cancer resistant genes (a tiny fraction of people get cancer before or during their reproductive years).

They do and this is well-documented. They're one of the few (only?) other species where we can directly see the role matriarchs (grandmothers, either past their reproductive ages or even undergoing menopause) have on the development of the youth, and it's been used to explore the role of living post-reproductive ancestors might have on natural selection (which was previously not thought to be affected by it).

Maternal grandmothers have even been found to ~spontaneously regain their milk to help nurse infant whales, iirc.


Humans commonly have grandchildren in their 40s (less so recently of course). We get fragile in our 70s. I'm wondering about living decades in that fragile state, where cancer happens to be a lot more common.

I like the theory that whales are so big that their tumors get killed by tumors before they can spread.

The paper trails leads back to the datacenter, they'd shut it down if they get noticed that a customer is paying with stolen money. Unless you suggest the LLM will also launder the money.

Yeah, ammonia can also be used, it's, IIRC, more efficient to use it and a bit safer because you don't high pressure, buuut enough ammonia in the air will suffocate you.

It's lighter than air so it will go away by itself if allowed to. For a purely exterior instalation it's much better than anything else.

Having a high pressure ammonia leak indoors is a death sentence for anybody in the same room. Same building, if it's large enough...


I have a heat pump that uses R290 (propane) (as well as an CO2 one for hot water) and would take that any day of the week over ammonia! The charge of propane is pretty tiny and the safety standards extremely strict, so not really concerning in terms of flammability, ammonia I would consider far, far more dangerous.

The “common” places I’ve seen ammonia refrigeration in use are hockey rinks and cold storage warehouses. I assume it’s used in industrial installations as well for heat rejection.

I feel like potential suffocation is not what I'd be most concerned about if I were in an atmosphere with high concentrations of gaseous ammonia.
